A practical overview of PPO licensing, security-officer registration, firearms permits and other California BSIS checks relevant to a security assignment.

In California, private security is regulated by the Department of Consumer Affairs through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS). If you are buying security, the licensing of the people on your site is not a formality — it is the difference between a defensible operation and a liability you did not know you were carrying.
Two things are worth confirming before an officer ever arrives. First, the individual officer's registration — commonly called a Guard Card — which requires state-mandated training and a background check. Second, the licensing of the company supplying them, which operates under its own Private Patrol Operator licence. A firm should be able to evidence both without hesitation.
Armed assignments raise the bar further. An armed officer needs a current firearms permit in addition to their guard registration, and the decision to deploy one should follow an honest assessment of the threat rather than a default. Asking to see current credentials is reasonable, and a professional provider expects the question.
Compliance is also ongoing rather than a one-time check. Training has to stay current, registrations have to be renewed, and documentation has to be produced when it is needed. If a provider is vague about any of this, treat it as the answer. At Armani, security personnel are expected to maintain the registrations, permits and training applicable to the duties they are assigned to perform, and assignment-specific credential requirements can be explained to the client.
